San Francisco may become the first city in the USA to give junk mail the boot. ForestEthics, the driving force behind the Do Not Mail Registry Campaign, is reporting that San Francisco has become the first city in the U.S. to officially support a solution to junk mail in the form of a Do Not Mail Registry.
The recently passed resolution calls on the State of California to create a statewide system to allow people the option of receiving less junk mail.
In 2003, the US Congress created the national Do Not Call Registry – one of the most popular consumer rights bill in U.S. history. The companion Do Not Mail Registry is an important component in helping individuals choose to end the unwanted arrival of junk mail.
One-third of the entire world's mail is U.S. junk mail. It takes more than 100 million trees to produce the volume of junk mail that arrives in American mailboxes each year, equivalent to clear-cutting the entire Rocky Mountain National Park every four months reports ForestEthics.
San Francisco's resolution is the first step to passing meaningful legislation to stop the junk mail industry.
